Get a Minecraft Mending Book from a Librarian

In a normal Minecraft world, the most controllable way to get a Minecraft Mending book is to reroll an untraded librarian. Check its enchanted-book offer, reset the lectern if Mending is missing, and do not trade until the book appears; the first trade locks that villager’s offers.

Check This Setting Before You Reroll

The steps below apply when the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment is off, which is the default. Under default trades, a librarian of any level can offer Mending. If you enabled the experiment, skip to the exception below: Mending is tied to a master-level swamp librarian instead. Minecraft Wiki: Mending.

Reroll an Untraded Librarian Until It Offers Mending

  1. Start with an unemployed adult villager that has never been traded with. Do not use a nitwit. Keep the lectern available to this villager so another villager cannot claim it.
  2. Place a lectern and wait for the villager to become a librarian. Open the trade screen and inspect its enchanted-book offer. Do not complete any trade yet.
  3. If the book is not Mending, break the lectern. Wait for the villager to lose the librarian profession, then place the lectern again and check the new offer. Repeat until Mending appears.
  4. When Mending appears, buy the book from that offer. The trade locks the librarian’s offers in place. Keep its lectern accessible so it can work and restock a sold-out offer.

The important cutoff is the first completed trade. Before that, removing and replacing the job-site block can change the offers; afterward, the villager keeps its profession and trade set. See the Librarian and Trading pages for the workstation and trade-lock details.

If Villager Trade Rebalance Is Enabled

Do not spend time rerolling ordinary librarians in an experimental world. With Villager Trade Rebalance enabled, Mending is the guaranteed enchanted-book trade for a master-level swamp librarian. Java requires the experimental datapack; Bedrock requires Villager Trade Rebalancing in the world’s Experiments settings. This feature is off by default. The Minecraft Wiki librarian table lists the biome-specific master trades.

If You Do Not Want to Reroll Villagers

Mending can also come from non-village structure loot or fishing; Bedrock Edition has raid drops as another source. Those routes are chance-based, so use them as backups if you do not want to set up a librarian. An enchanting table cannot give you Mending because it is a treasure enchantment. Bottom Line

For default settings, reroll a librarian before trading with it. Once its offer shows Mending, make one trade to keep that offer and buy the book.
